Background information: 
Born in the United Kingdom and raised in Cyprus, Murat Hakki is an advocate practising in Cyprus. Murat completed his higher education at the University of Southampton in England. Thereafter, he pursued and completed postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics, Cornell Law School and Harvard University.   • Acted for a local bank in a dispute involving the scope of vicarious liability for the fraudulent acts of an employee.
  • Acted for a Greek Cypriot construction company in a dispute on the national law to be applied to assess the discharge of a pre-1974 debt.
  • Acted for a local bank in a dispute involving the scope of bank liability for wire transfers done based on the oral instructions of a customer.
  • Counsel for a major Greek Cypriot real estate company in a certiorari application to quash a 2005 Famagusta District Court judgement declaring all land in Varosha as the property of Abdullah Pasha Vaqf, a pious foundation established in the 18th century.
  • Counsel for a major local tourism company in its certiorari application to quash a judgement obtained earlier by consent.
  • Counsel before the European Court of Human Rights for a major Turkish Cypriot pious foundation against the government of the Republic of Cyprus in a dispute involving the foundation properties in the possession of the latter in Nicosia.
  • Counsel for a Turkish Cypriot vaqf mutevelli (trustee) against the government of the Republic of Cyprus in a dispute on the validity of her appointment as a trustee.
  • Acted for a Greek Cypriot refugee in a dispute with the government of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus involving the amount of damages due and the return of her properties.
  • Counsel for a Turkish company that sought and secured an injunction against the presentment or indorsement of its cheque valued at 1 Million GBP.
  • Counsel for two Turkish Cypriot individuals against the government of the Republic of Cyprus in a dispute involving the personal properties in the possession of the latter in Larnaca. ​​
  • Counsel for two Greek Cypriot brothers in a claim against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus authorities for interest for late payment of expropriation compensation.
  • Counsel before the European Court of Human Rights in more than 20 applications for major Greek Cypriot individuals, construction and real estate companies having multi-million GBP claims against the Republic of Turkey for delays in the enforcement of their compensation awards rendered by the Immovable Property Commission in Nicosia.
  • Counsel for the biggest local bank in its challenge of the constitutionality of a law on the re-structuring of debts and non-performing loans.
  • Acted for a major Greek Cypriot real estate company claiming compensation in excess of €100 m from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus authorities for its buildings located in Varosha.
  • Counsel for a major co-operative bank in a dispute challenging its refusal to honor a high profile customer’s cheque following which the latter received public ban on issuing further cheques.
  • Counsel for a Greek Cypriot individual in his sequestration of the government Ministers’ official vehicles after the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus authorities failed to promptly pay the compensation judged to be due to him.   
  • Counsel for a well-known Turkish Cypriot family against the government of the Republic of Cyprus in a dispute involving the family properties in the possession of the latter in Limassol worth in excess of €20 Million.
  • Counsel for a Greek Cypriot individual who sought a recognition of his locus standi before the courts of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to apply for the cancellation of a pre-1974 mortgage registered over the property for which he claimed compensation from the local authorities.
  • Counsel for a well-known Turkish Cypriot family against the government of the Republic of Cyprus in a dispute involving the family properties in the possession of the latter in Paphos worth in excess of €10 Million.
