Background information:
Ryland is dual qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor and has over 10 years of legal experience in the construction industry. Apart from his work as legal adviser on many projects around the world, the focus of his work is dispute resolution. Ryland is an experienced advocate and lead representative in adjudication, arbitration and commercial litigation.
Ryland acted on a wide variety of construction, building, rail and civil engineering projects which involve the investigation, management and successful resolution of contractual and commercial disputes. Ryland is highly experienced, both as a party representative and as advocate in all forms of dispute resolution, including arbitration, adjudication, mediation, and dispute boards. For example, at Mitshubishi, Ryland represented Mitshubishi in a successful conciliation before a panel of two London QC’s and a prominent Hong Kong mediator, won a breach of contract case before another high profile mediator and successfully defended a multi-million dollar set off and deduction claim and acted as junior counsel in a $60Million high profile design and disruption claim in an arbitration that involved world renowned experts and lawyers.

Ryland has acted as lead representative and advocate in over 100 adjudications through Silver Shemmings and Alway Associates. Described as a shooting star in the resolution of construction and engineering disputes by clients, Ryland has quickly carved a niche in adjudication and arbitral proceedings on behalf of Employers, Developers, Contractors and Sub-Contractors. His work includes contractual and common law advice, representation at hearings and drafting of claims, counterclaims and defences.
Ryland regularly advises clients upon the many and various issues that can impact upon a project through its lifecycle from pre-contract to post-completion, including strategic and dispute avoidance advice during the engineering and construction process. Ryland had significant experience in the vetting, drafting and negotiation of a range of construction and engineering contracts (including JCT and NEC suite of contract) and in the drafting and reviewing of main contracts, sub-contracts, bonds, guarantees and collateral warranties.

Seminar and Training:
  • Ryland regularly presents seminars and lectures to the public, local authorities, construction companies of all sizes, consultancies, banks and other lawyers;
  • Ryland provides educational internationally on a range of construction law subjects and on a variety of standard forms of construction and engineering contracts;
  • Ryland was also involved in two television interviews for the RIBA on the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009 and the updated JCT 2011 suite of contracts..
